Law Firm M&A
We do work for law firms that are looking to expand by acquiring a smaller firm. Although this often entails an out-of-market acquisition, we have located in-market firms that, unbeknownst to the potential acquirer, have been interested in a merger.
We also are frequently approached by firms that are interested in combining with a larger firm or one of relatively equal size. In many cases, these firms have been interested in becoming the local office of a national or regional firm that does not have a presence in their market. The following are some representative examples of successes to-date. In each case, we found the target firm, facilitated the introduction, helped to manage due diligence, and were intimately involved in closing the deal:
- Growth-oriented, national, AmLaw 100 law firm expands in a highly competitive market by acquiring a seven-lawyer white collar and commercial litigation boutique. Acquired firm had routinely rebuffed merger attempts over the years, but, after reviewing our M&A materials, agreed to move forward;
- Well-respected AmLaw 200 firm acquires 23-lawyer general practice firm in one of the country’s hottest legal markets. Acquirer had made repeated attempts over a rather lengthy period of years to expand in the market, but continually hit dead ends. Attorney Career Catalysts was retained to find a suitable target firm and spearheaded its closing;
- One of the leading firms in its market sought to expand its transactional capabilities. Attorney Career Catalysts was engaged to lead a retained search and facilitated the client’s acquisition of a 13-lawyer general practice firm which had a number of essential transactional practices.
